Kondareddypally Shines as India’s Second Fully Solar-Powered Village

KONDAREDDYPALLY, Telangana: In a landmark achievement for rural electrification and clean energy, the village of Kondareddypally in Vangoor mandal of Nagarkurnool district has been declared India’s second fully solar-powered village.

Under the project initiated by the Telangana Green Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TREDCO), the village now boasts solar installations covering 514 homes and 11 government buildings.

The total installed capacity is approximately 1,500 kW (1.5 MW), enabling residents to meet their electricity needs entirely through rooftop solar power.

Each home has been equipped with an individual 3 kW rooftop solar unit, while the public buildings’ installations collectively contribute around 60 kW.

According to project documents, households are generating approximately 360 units of electricity per month, effectively eliminating their monthly electricity bills.

A unique aspect of the initiative is the sale of surplus electricity back to the grid. At a rate of ₹5.25 per unit, the village supplied nearly 100,000 units of power to the grid in September alone, generating approximately ₹5 lakh in revenue for the villagers.

The project, with an estimated cost of ₹10.53 crore, was executed with funding from multiple sources: a ₹3.56 crore subsidy from the central government, CSR contributions of ₹4.09 crore from private partner Premier Energies, and ₹2.59 crore allocated by the state government.

Active community involvement was also cited as critical to success, with residents participating in the planning, installation, and future maintenance of the systems.

Officials say that although 480 homes are already running entirely on solar power, the remaining 34 mud-walled houses will be covered soon once the allied housing units are completed.

The village’s transformation is being hailed as a model for decentralized, sustainable energy in rural India, one that demonstrates how renewable power can be paired with economic empowerment at the local level.

By turning households into energy producers rather than merely consumers, Kondareddypally is positioned as a success story in the green economy. The surplus power exports offer a tangible revenue stream for residents, reinforcing the notion that renewable infrastructure can contribute to both livelihoods and environmental goals.

Telangana’s push for renewable energy adoption was a key driver behind the project, aligning with broader national efforts to expand clean energy access and reduce dependence on fossil-fuelled power. Experts suggest that the replicability of the Kondareddypally model could accelerate the adoption of similar initiatives in other villages across India.

In sum, Kondareddypally’s full solar-power rollout marks both a technical and social milestone, proving that rural clean energy systems can deliver reliability, savings, and new income opportunities. As India continues to advance its renewable energy ambitions, such localized success stories may serve as a blueprint for broader transformation.
