Lithium-Ion Batteries Left Charging Trigger Calgary House Fire, Fire Department Warns of Rapid Thermal Runaway

A lithium-ion battery fire in Calgary has renewed concerns about the risks associated with charging high-energy batteries in residential environments, after firefighters confirmed that batteries left charging in a basement caused a house fire.

The incident occurred on July 16, 2026, when Calgary Fire Department crews responded to a residential property in the 3000 block of Dover Ridge Drive SE. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from the single-storey home and located the fire in the basement. They identified the source as lithium-ion batteries that had been left charging while renovation work was underway.

Firefighters used a large dry-chemical extinguisher to bring the fire under control. No injuries were reported. A young person who was inside the house evacuated after being alerted by the home’s smoke alarms and contacted emergency services from a neighbour’s home.

Despite the lack of injuries, the incident highlighted another danger associated with lithium-ion battery fires: toxic smoke. Calgary Fire Department said the occupants were temporarily displaced because of the smoke produced by the battery fire.

Why Lithium Batteries Can Become Dangerous

Calgary’s official lithium-battery safety guidance warns that fires and explosions can occur when batteries are damaged, improperly stored or disposed of, misused, overcharged, or manufactured without meeting appropriate safety standards.

The department explains that a failing lithium-ion battery can enter thermal runaway, an uncontrolled self-heating process that can cause temperatures to rise rapidly. Heat can then spread from one cell to neighbouring cells, creating a larger and increasingly difficult-to-control fire. In some circumstances, flammable gases can accumulate and result in an explosion.

Calgary Fire Department advises consumers to use certified batteries and chargers, avoid modifying batteries, and use batteries only with equipment for which they are designed.

The Calgary incident therefore raises a wider question for lithium-battery users worldwide:
